FreshBooks Ranks Number One in Canada’s Best Workplaces List for 2016
A passion for building products and serving small business owners unites the FreshBooks team
Toronto, Canada — April 22, 2016 — FreshBooks, the #1 cloud accounting software designed exclusively for service-based small business owners, was today recognized as this year’s Best Workplace in Canada. This news follows the company’s recent announcement as one of Canada’s Top 100 Small & Medium Employers for 2016.
The “Best Workplaces in Canada” list is compiled annually by the Great Place to Work® Institute’s Canadian branch. The Great Place to Work Institute®, as a global network, focuses on creating and showcasing high-trust workplace cultures across more than 50 countries. Companies are evaluated based on their culture, values and practices, with two-thirds of the total score being calculated from an anonymous survey completed by employees. The remaining one-third of the score comes from an in-depth review of the organization’s culture and people programs.
“In FreshBooks’ early days, my co-founders and I made an important decision,” said Mike McDerment, co-founder and CEO, FreshBooks. “We agreed to, without compromise, hire talented professionals based on nine core values called PORCHFEST: Passion, Ownership, Results, Change, Honesty, Fun, Empathy, Strive and Trust. Without a doubt, this decision has been a critical factor in FreshBooks’ success and the reason for the extraordinary culture we have today.”
Along with hiring for talent and values, FreshBooks has created a service culture that begins with every new hire – regardless of their role – spending their first month working in customer support. This first month lays the foundation for great decision making; it’s when FreshBookers develop an intimate understanding of the company’s customers, culture and products. A close connection with customers is also what inspires the best employees.
“There is nothing more rewarding than seeing how your day-to-day work is helping people. It’s what gets FreshBookers fired up,” says McDerment. “Talented people want to have real impact on others, and this drives our team to look for ways to continuously serve small business owners better.”
In an open letter from McDerment to customers earlier this year, he announced the company’s plans to unveil a whole new FreshBooks this summer. The new FreshBooks is not just a visual redesign, but a complete product redesign aimed to help customers solve the same problems in simpler and more modern ways. Behind the scenes, FreshBooks has been secretly building the product from the ground up, testing different experiences and gaining feedback directly from their customers. The result has been a personalized platform designed to be fast, responsive and simple, exceeding expectations of what accounting software should look and feel like for small business owners and their networks of clients and teams.
